New to Web Hosting |
Things that you need to know about setting up a website:-
1. Domain name
Domain name is the address that you enter to access your website. For example, thesuperhero.net, comdev.com and google.com. The primary address to access your website is normally www.domain.com. You can also create multiple subdomains such as www2.domain.com or office.domain.com to point to other locations or servers.
Registering your domain name is the very first thing you should do before someone else registers your choice of domain name.
The fee for registering a domain name is MYR 50 for InterNIC (.com, .net, etc.) and MYR 80 (.com.my, .net.my, etc.) for MyNIC on annual basis.
2. Web Hosting
Web hosting is the service of housing and serving your website on the Internet. All the files of your website are stored in a server maintained by us which is connected to the Internet on 24/7 basis in a data center.
Web hosting service comes in various offers such as 10 GB of hardisk space, 50 GB of bandwidth transfer, etc and also being categorized in different packages as budget hosting, business hosting, ecommerce hosting and so on.
Having your domain name registered, you will need to point it to the web hosting account's nameserver addresses. This will link up your domain name with the hosting server where you house your website and emails.
The SuperHero offers 10 GB of hosting space, 50 GB of bandwidth and 30 email accounts which is more than what you need to setup your website on the Internet.
3. Email
Having both domain name and web hosting account, you can now create your own corporate email addresses. Eg , john@yourdomain.com, abc@yourdomain.com, sales@yourdomain.com and so forth are corporate emails that you can have for yourselves and colleagues.
4. Hosting Control Panel
How do you create your email addresses, FTP accounts for you to upload files, MySQL database to run your web applications, view your website traffic's
statistics and access to software that run for your hosting account? You can do all of those using the hosting control panel.
Common control panels are cPanel, Plesk, HELM, DirectAdmin. We at The SuperHero are using cPanel for all our servers. On top of that we have
re-engineered the cPanel with our own software and user interface to make it even more user-friendly for non-technical and business users.
5. Web Designing
Once you have your domain name and web hosting account ready, you can hire web designers to help you building your very first website. A basic website project can range from MYR 1000 to a more complicated one, such as with Flash, eCommerce, web portal capabilities which can cost you MYR 3000 or more.
If you do not wish to invest so much at the first round, you can use the DIY tool that comes with your Super Website Ready Hosting. The software, Super Website Builder will let you select the design template, or let you customize your own, create web pages, update the content and finally publish to your website. It was made to be user friendly for non-technical users.
Over the time if you wish to extend your website to greater functionalities, you can use the same hosting account to upload more customized files and programs onto the website.
6. Software and Scripts
While other web hosting companies supply you with tonnes of free scripts, we do not recommend to do so. The reason is that free scripts are not supported by their providers which bring to security issues for your website, while upgrades and bugs fixes are slow to release. You will also find it very complicated and without any help if you wish to customize those scripts that you are using.
We recommend you to use commercial scripts or hire a web developer to program your web applications.
7. Common Problems
Most common problem faced is the reliability of the server which determines the uptime of your website. It is hard to guarantee 100% of uptime because sometimes server need to be rebooted for technical reasons. The server's performance may also slow down if somebody runs an infinite loop script or purposely manipulate the server.
To minimize such risk, we focus on delivering values to business customers who are looking for reliable hosting services and good software.
8. How Much Space Do You Need?
A normal website normally uses anywhere between 50-100 megabytes of hardisk space to host the web pages, while you may need another few hundred megabytes to 2 or 3 gigabytes to host your emails. Unless you store all emails in your mailbox, normally you won't need so much space for emails all the time because your mailbox will be empty after you download them into your computer.
Big websites such as forum use about 1 GB of space. For example, a forum with 5000 members with several thousands high-resolution pictures takes about 1.2 GB.
If you need more than such capacity, we recommend you to get a VPS (Virtual Private Server) or a dedicated server so that you can keep your website performance to the maximum without sharing the hardware resources with many other websites.
